Generally, soft bottomed boats have a fabric bottom, and may have, in addition, either floorboards or an inflatable floor. The main reason for a soft bottomed boat is that it can be rolled up into a relatively small package for storage. This feature is very attractive for offshore sailors, and those who don't need to have a fully set up boat all the time, but still need a dinghy. The RIB design combines the performance and tracking of a rigid hull with the safety and load carrying of an inflatable. Larger RIBs serve as rescue boats, tour boats, and heavy duty work boats with as many built in features as one can imagine. RIBs can carry larger motors and provide tremendous speed and range advantages.
