There a number of factors to consider when deciding on a motor. Many people find that they do not need a motor at all, and are happy to row. As the boat gets bigger and the need to have a boat for exploring, fishing, and carrying a heavy load come along, a motor almost becomes a necessity. Much will depend on the size of the boat (maximum HP or suggested HP per the manufacturer), how it will be used, the desire for performance, and whether the motor will stay on the boat or be taken off between uses.
