Just like your car, your outboard will be far more reliable and long-lived if it is serviced regularly. Unlike a car, outboards live in a corosive marine environment. Annual service is important to keep important parts lubricated, the oil and filter changed, the lower unit oil inspected and changed, and the water pump serviced. In between services, it is important to keep the outboard cleaned, and regularly flushed with fresh water to prevent build-up of salt in the internal cooling passages.
