Although there are diesel outboards availible, the vast majority of motors are gasoline powered. Gasoline deteriorates with age (it can go "bad" in a matter of months). Gasoline can also pick up water along the way. Either of these things can make a motor perform poorly, or even not run. We suggest that you use only fresh fuel, and if possible, use a water separating fuel filter between the tank and the engine. These things are true for both 4 stroke engines and 2 strokes, either premix or oil injected.
