The number and type of spares depends on where you are cruising and your level of mechanical ability. For an extended trip, besides the basic tool kit that comes with a new motor, we would recommend carrying a set of spark plugs, pull rope for starting, spare fuel and oil filters, oil, lower unit oil, water pump repair kit, and a spare prop, cotterpins, and shear pins (if your motor uses them). A set of flushing "ears" will allow fresh water flushing wherever you are.
